Dylan Fairchild and Amarius Mims were a part of the same 2021 recruiting class for Georgia. They only spent one year playing together on the field, but spent more than enough time building a friendship outside Saturday afternoons in the fall.

And nothing bonds people quite like nicknames.

When the Cincinnati Bengals selected Fairchild in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Mims was one of the first people to call his former teammate. That interaction is how Cincinnati learned about Fairchild's nickname, "Pickle."

It wasn't until nearly two weeks later that we learned where it came from.

Amarius Mims explains origin of Dylan "Pickle" Fairchild

Mims was Georgia's top recruit from that 2021 class and one of four five-stars arriving in Athens. It made sense why he took it upon himself to give out nicknames to his fellow freshmen, including a four-star by the name of Brock Bowers.

"I don't even know man, it's just my freshman year, I was trying to think of nicknames." Mims said to WCPO's Marshall Kramsky. "So like Brock Bowers, for example, I called him 'Stanley.' Some odd reason he was like a 'Stanley' to me, and I was like, all right, that's your nickname."

Bowers, now an All-Pro for the Las Vegas Raiders, became "Stanley" off pure looks. In Mims' recounting, Fairchild got his nickname based on the flow of words.

And it's stuck to this day.

"Like Dylan. We got to find a name for Dylan. I'm just sitting there thinking his name Dylan, I was like, 'Pickle D' so I was like, yep. Everybody loved it. So it stuck. So we just dropped the D and we just called him 'Pickle.'

"Everybody on the o-line still to this day, like that, from my sophomore year to now, everybody like in that online group still call him Pickle."

Does it make sense? I'm sure it did to Mims four years ago when he was an 18-year freshman. He confirmed the nickname will live on in a Bengals locker room that now contains three former Bulldogs including running back Kendall Milton, who played three years with Mims and Fairchild for Georgia.

"Pickle" and his fellow rookies will take part in rookie minicamp Friday, May 9.
