The last time Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow faced the Philadelphia Eagles was in 2020.
Burrow was sacked eight times that game.
The Eagles defense that Burrow will face this Sunday looks a bit different, but they're still just as dangerous.
However, the good news for Burrow is that longtime defensive tackle Fletcher Cox is no longer a part of the Eagles' front seven after throwing in the towel earlier this year.
And Burrow is really happy about that.
“He’s a great player, always was, always disruptive, so I’m glad he’s retired,” Burrow said of Cox. "I hope he’s still sitting on his couch enjoying a nice dinner or something. Stay off the field.”
While Cox will be one less guy for Burrow to worry about, the Bengals are not naive to the fact that the Eagles still have several others on the defensive line to consider.
Bengals' head coach Zac Taylor singled out linebacker Zack Baun, who currently leads the team in tackles
“The front jumps out at you,” Taylor said. “They’ve invested in that front. They’ve got big defensive tackles, they’ve got really athletic edge guys. [Linebacker Zack] Baun comes off the second level. They like to pressure him as well. He’s done a good job, and gotten some production. It’s a good defense. They played well last week. They got a lot of production last week. It’s a challenge for us.”
Under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the Eagles' defense kicked off the season with a slow start but has since found some mojo and enter this week after picking up eight sacks and holding the New York Giants to just 119 total yards.
Cox may no longer be with Philly, but there's a chance Burrow suffers from Déjà vu come Sunday afternoon.
