It was a wild week for the Cincinnati Bengals to manage. Joe Flacco came to town as the new starting quarterback on Tuesday evening, and he only had a handful of practices to try and end his new team's three-game losing streak. Flacco and the Bengals ultimately fell to the Green Bay Packers, but we learned some lessons about where Cincinnati is six weeks into the year.
Let's see what the snap counts had to say about the Bengals' loss in Green Bay.
The first play of the game saw rookie linebacker Barrett Carter (61) on the field with team captain Logan Wilson (12) as the two off-ball backers. Wilson would only play 11 more snaps while Carter, wearing the green dot on his helmet signifying whom the coaches are talking to on the field, played the entire game.
Wilson has had this role for the past few years since emerging as a starter. Sunday signaled the end of that, at least for now. Head coach Zac Taylor made the change more about the rookie than the veteran.
“Logan still has his role he will play," Taylor said after the game. "This says more about Barrett.”
Regardless which player is more of the focus, Cincinnati is paying Wilson a pretty penny to be demoted for a rookie drafted in the fourth round just six months ago. This development has ramifications beyond just the next few weeks, but it will be telling if Wilson stays playing just a dozen or so snaps a game from here on out.
Chase Brown (35) and Samaje Perine (30) played half the game each for a second straight week. Their splits match how the offense deployed them last week against the Detroit Lions. This time, instead of Perine outproducing Brown, it was the latter who had 42 yards on nine carries
Brown has yet to cross 50 yards in a single game this season, but 4.7 yards per carry on Sunday was a season-high. With a new QB under center, perhaps it's a positive sign of things to come. Perine still figures to be a healthy part of the offense either way.
