Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season will be one to forget for the Cincinnati Bengals after blowing a 14-point fourth quarter lead to the New York Jets. The defense fell apart when it was needed the most, and while some trends remain consistent, there was a change of heart in the secondary.

Let’s see what the snap counts had to say about the Bengals’ loss to New York.

Cam Taylor-Britt back in good graces?

Cincinnati made a statement by making Cam Taylor-Britt (55) inactive in Week 7, and proceeded to make another statement by starting him in Week 8. Taylor-Britt didn't play as much as Dax Hill (72) and DJ Turner II (71), but he was out there for the first snap and whenever the Bengals were in their nickel defense with three cornerbacks on the field.

Taylor-Britt was only targeted once in coverage and allowed zero receptions to go with two tackles. He played well in his chance for redemption after being benched, and while he may not be ahead of Hill or Turner on the depth chart, he can still play a role when needed.

Trends on the edges

Trey Hendrickson (23) was able to suit up and play, but he wasn't 100% and ended up leaving the game after re-aggravating his hip injury. The Bengals knew they weren't going to get a full game from their All-Pro defensive end no matter what, and deployed a similar strategy with Myles Murphy (56), Joseph Ossai (50), and Shemar Stewart (40).

Stewart got the start but played fewer snaps than both Murphy and Ossai, which matched the plan from last week when Hendrickson didn't play at all. Murphy and Ossai are getting about the same number of pass-rushing opportunities but aren't maximizing them. Neither one has produced a sack since Week 5. That will need to change next week if Hendrickson is out again.

Expert analysis on Bengals’ Week 8 snap counts against Jets

  • Left guard Dylan Fairchild (58) missed one play due to the knee injury he was playing through. Lucas Patrick (1) was his replacement as Dalton Risner was active but dealing with an illness. Patrick had not appeared in a game since starting at right guard in Week 1.
  • Linebacker Logan Wilson (20) remains the first linebacker off the bench despite his pending trade request. Oren Burks (1) is behind him still.
