Monitoring NFL betting trends is a must if you plan to bet on sides or totals each Sunday. Last week's latest example of targeting a team who have been covering well (Cowboys) against a team that's struggled ATS (Rams) delivered, as Dallas beat Los Angeles 22-10.
The Falcons have done it again! Surely at some point they won't cover the spread, right?
As has so often been the case, Atlanta backdoor covered their way into 5-0 ATS, as they were down 21-0 to Tampa Bay at one point.
The Cowboys, Chargers, Giants and Bills would all be in the postseason if the season ended today. Meanwhile, the Texans picked up their first win of the year against the Jaguars on Sunday.
We have five teams at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to covering the spread.
The Panthers fired their coach in Matt Rhule, and rumors suggest Carolina is in full-on selling mode with some of their best players. There's some merit to betting on the Panthers with interim Steve Wilks taking over, as we typically see a team play better after their coach is fired, but it's likely not going to be sustainable.
The Broncos and Rams have been two of the most disappointing teams in the NFL through five weeks, both sitting at 2-3.
Minnesota is 4-1, so it's surprising to see them failing to cover so often. Washington's season is arguably already over, as they're 1-4 overall with every other NFC East team 4-1 or better.
The Lions are no longer perfect against the over after being surprisingly shut out by New England this past weekend.
The Browns defense has serious issues, while their run game has continuously gashed opposing defenses. It's a nice combination for overs, and is a team worth betting on more.
The Lions and Raiders are both on bye this week, but they too remain good over targets.
Unders have continued to be the more profitable side through five weeks in the NFL, with two teams undefeated to the under and a large handful more currently 4-1.
It remains a bit of a shock that the Bengals have yet to go over, but after watching them on Sunday Night Football, it starts to make a bit more sense. This offensive line is a problem, Joe Burrow has not been able to push the ball down the field when a strong pass rush is on the other end.
The Bills pulled their weight in the over department last week, scoring 38 points, but their elite defense held the Steelers to only a field goal.
Denver Broncos @ Los Angeles Chargers (-5) — We'll have to wait until Monday night to watch the Broncos on prime time again. Thanks, schedule makers! Russell Wilson and Denver have shown absolutely no offensive ability at all, so this feels like an easy choice. The opportunity to back the Chargers and Justin Herbert, who despite being 4-1 ATS haven't yet had an explosive passing performance, feels like the right call on MNF. Don't be surprised if this spread grows past the current -5 by the time Monday rolls around.
