In honor of the Super Bowl coming up, let’s look back on previous games on this stage. This ranges from the second showdown between the New York Giants and New England Patriots to last year. What were the best Super Bowls to watch in that span?
This was the original Super Bowl matchup between the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, with an unforgettable ending that will never be forgotten. In this game, Seattle was looking to repeat as champions while Tom Brady and the Patriots sought their first Super Bowl victory in a decade.
Seattle’s defense was ranked first in scoring; they allowed just 15.9 points per game. New England’s offense, on the other hand, was ranked fourth in that category. It was a classic iron sharpens iron situation between two heavyweights.
Super Bowl 49 started slowly, as neither offense scored in the first quarter. Brady threw a red zone interception in the waning moments. Russell Wilson was not doing much better, with Seattle going three-and-out in two of its first three possessions. The Patriots then got things going with a score to go up 7-0. Seattle then answered to knot it up at seven apiece. The first half ended with both teams throwing punches in a back-and-forth fashion.
The game went into halftime, 14-14. The third quarter was when things got a little dicey for Brady and company. Seattle came out and kicked a field goal to take the lead, and then New England had their second turnover of the game in the ensuing possession.
Seattle took that mistake and made them pay, going up 24-14. The score remained the same at the end of the third quarter, and history was on their side. No team, up til that point, had ever overcome a 10+ point deficit in the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter, however, began the second chapter of Brady’s dominance. Against the best defense in the league, the Pats went down 68 and 64 yards on consecutive possessions to score touchdowns. New England was up, 28-24, with just over two minutes to go.
That, however, was still too much time. It was time for Wilson to put his name in the NFL books. Could he lead a game-winning drive against Brady in the Super Bowl?
The third-year quarterback was on his way to do so! Seattle sat on the one-yard line with around 30 secons remainig. Marshawn Lynch had just run four yards on the play before. They have one timeout and face second down.
Just run the ball with Beast Mode one yard away, right? Instead, Pete Carroll and team outsmarted themselves and tried throwing a slant to Ricardo Lockette, and it was intercepted by Malcom Butler. That sealed the game away. Brady had his fourth, as the Seahawks were just one yard away from repeating. It was a heartbreaking moment for Hawks fans. I’m sure they are dying for redemption next week.
Heartbreak is an understatement to describe what the Atlanta Falcons went through. Seattle’s crushing defeat in the Super Bowl pales in comparison to what happened here.
Atlanta came in as the top-ranked offense led by MVP Matt Ryan. They were far away the best team in the NFC and just came off a 44-21 rout over the Green Bay Packers. The Patriots, once again, were the class of the AFC to no surprise. This time, it was New England that came into the game with a defensive mentality. It was going to be hard for them to match the number on offense point for point.
Well, in the first half, any game plan they had was thrown out the window. After a scoreless first quarter by both teams, the Falcons went up 21-0 after a pick-six thrown by Brady. The game was 21-3 at halftime. Atlanta looked like the faster, younger, and hungrier team. Brady and the offense were on the field a lot, but couldn’t finish drives.
In second half came things weren’t a lot better. Atlanta went up 28-3 midway through the third quarter. You know what happened after this.
The Patriots’ offense went down and scored on a slow drive, making it 28-9. That was the end of the third quarter. Atlanta, however, was unable to do much after scoring their 28th point. After New England cut it to 28-9, they kicked an onside kick, and the Falcons recovered. Atlanta just needed a first down to go up 31-9. Instead, they went backwards, mustering up -15 yards. Brady and company then cut it to 28-12, and it became a two-score game.
Atlanta was still in firm control. They just need a few first downs, and it would be hard for a comeback to take place. Then came the play of the game. Dont’a Hightower sacked Ryan on a third and one with just around eight minutes to go. That play changed everything. The New England offense wasted no time scoring, making it 28-20. Now the Falcons needed to do something on this drive. A three-and-out was not an option.
After an incredible catch by Julio Jones, the red and black found themselves at the Patriots 22 yard line. With just five minutes to go, a field goal meant so much. With a combination of sacks and penalties, the Falcons drive ended at the 45-yard line instead. They had to punt, and it was Tom Brady time.
Down eight with three and a half minutes to go, everyone knew what was coming. Brady, masterfully, led the offense down to the game at 28, and all of a sudden, that 25-point deficit was gone. The game went into overtime, where the Patriots won the toss and elected to receive.
All Ryan could do was sit there and watch the greatest to ever do it lead his team to an impossible victory. New England wins 34-28, and the Falcons have never recovered to this day. Brady got his fifth, which surpassed Terry Bradshaw for the most all-time.
The two best Super Bowls I’ve ever watched were New England Patriots victories. Not an ideal spot to be in, but it is the truth. It would be incredible for the Super Bowl rematch to repeat it’s orignal meeting between the two teams.
Just nine more days till the big game!
