Best, worst offseason moves for Baltimore Ravens

The 2023 NFL Draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29. The Ravens have been cap-strapped with Lamar Jackson's future in doubt but here are the best and worst moves they’ve made so far.

BEST | Tagging Lamar Jackson

Baltimore might seem like it doesn't have control of Jackson since he requested a trade on March 2 but since he was placed with the $32.41 million non-exclusive franchise tag, the team has itself in as good of a spot as it can be. Another team can sign Jackson to an offer sheet, but Baltimore has five days to match it or it will receive two first-round picks.

Of course, the Ravens want to work out a long-term deal with the 2019 NFL MVP. However, if the situation does fall through, Baltimore has provided itself with much-needed insurance. If the team does trade Jackson, it will be no easy task of finding another franchise quarterback, but the compensation it will receive will certainly help.

BEST | Signing Nelson Agholor

The Ravens have had their hands tied behind their backs throughout free agency as they figure out whether their future includes Jackson. However, the wide receiver-needy team was still able to add a playmaker for its offense in Agholor. It wasn't the flashiest move, but adding a veteran on a cheap, one-year deal is always a win.

Agholor only had 362 yards and two touchdowns in 2022 but he should help Baltimore's receiver corps that didn't have a player eclipse 500 yards in 2022. The Ravens could still add another receiver to their room in free agency or the 2023 NFL Draft as well, but something is better than nothing.

WORST | Releasing Calais Campbell

Baltimore released Campbell to save $7M against the cap. Although the team didn't close the door on the possibility of him returning, the Falcons swooped in as soon as they had the chance, signing him to a one-year deal. The Ravens lost a leader on and off the field as the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year heads to Atlanta.

The six-time Pro Bowler totaled 113 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery during his three years in Baltimore. The team must now add another position to its growing list of needs in an offseason where it has lost more players than it has added.

WORST | Losing Ben Powers

The Ravens lost one of the pillars of their offensive line in Powers. It took the Broncos less than an hour to sign him to a four-year, $52M contract when the NFL's legal tampering free-agency window opened. Powers had helped Baltimore have one of the best rushing attacks in the league, but his price tag was too high after a breakout season.

Powers, who is still only 26, was one of the NFL's best guards in 2022, allowing zero sacks and being penalized just once, according to Pro Football Focus. The Ravens will need to turn to their 2021 third-round pick in Ben Cleveland or look to the draft to find their next starter at left guard.
