The Buffalo Bills lost their second game of the season on Monday against the Atlanta Falcons by a final score of 24-14, marking their second consecutive defeat and raising concerns about the team’s defensive depth. While Buffalo’s offense, led by quarterback Josh Allen, has remained the driving force behind their success, the defense has faltered under the weight of mounting injuries and missing personnel.

The linebackers and defensive front struggled to contain Atlanta’s ground game, surrendering 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a performance that exposed the unit’s lack of physicality and consistency. With key contributors like Matt Milano and multiple defensive tackles sidelined, the Bills have been forced to rely on backups and practice squad call-ups to fill critical roles.

With Buffalo looking to regroup during its Week 7 bye, the team made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday. “We have made the following roster moves: Released LB Jimmy Ciarlo. Released CB Jalen Kimber from the practice squad,” the team announced on X. The timing of the moves reflects the Bills’ need to retool defensively amid mounting injuries and underperformance.

Ciarlo, a second-year linebacker out of Army, had appeared in one regular-season game after joining the team earlier this year. He was originally signed by the New York Jets in 2024 but missed time due to injury before landing in Buffalo. Known for his leadership and toughness, Ciarlo became a fan favorite during his stint on HBO’s Hard Knocks.

Kimber, a cornerback who spent time at Georgia, Florida, and Penn State in college, was signed to the Bills’ practice squad earlier this season after a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans. With Buffalo’s secondary also dealing with injuries—most notably Damar Hamlin landing on injured reserve—the team had hoped Kimber could provide emergency depth.

The Bills have been hit hard on defense this season, especially along the defensive line where DaQuan Jones, T.J. Sanders and DeWayne Carter have all missed time. The team also awaits the return of suspended defensive tackles Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht, who are eligible to play in Week 8.

With Buffalo sitting at 4-2 and facing a critical stretch ahead, the front office is clearly making moves to stabilize the roster and prepare for the second half of the season.
