Joe Brady was named the 21st head coach of the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. He agreed to a five-year contract hoping to maximize the Bills' Super Bowl window with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Josh Allen.

Brady spent his first two seasons under former head coach Sean McDermott as the Bills' QB coach, working directly with Allen in 2022 and 2023. For the last two seasons, he was McDermott's offensive coordinator, helping to scheme up Allen's 2024 MVP season.

After being promoted from his OC role, Brady made a point to ESPN's Pat McAfee that he is "not an offensive head coach," which led to a comment about Allen he would regret.

"I just told the guys out there, 'I can't wait for the first practice to go out there and Josh to throw a (expletive) pick and I get to celebrate with the defense,'" Brady said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Thursday.

Brady's comment got back to him quickly on another podcast appearance in his first week as the head coach. On the "Fitz & Whit" podcast, former Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick pushed back against the idea that Brady would be excited to see Allen make a mistake, even if it meant being able to celebrate the defense making a play. Brady took the opportunity to backtrack on his comment.

"I regret that, I'm not going to lie," Brady admitted. "I want to celebrate with the defense, and the only way I can celebrate with the defense is if James Cook fumbles or Josh throws a pick. I've got to sort through that. As soon as I said it, I was like, 'I'm going to be pissed off.'"

The topic of turnovers is a sensitive one in Buffalo following the Bills' playoff exit in the AFC divisional round to the Denver Broncos. In their 33-30 overtime loss, the Bills turned the ball over five times, including a fumble by Cook and four total turnovers (two interceptions, two lost fumbles) by Allen.

The Bills ranked tied for 15th in the NFL with 19 giveaways in the 2025 regular season. Allen contributed 13 of them, finishing the year with 10 interceptions and three lost fumbles.
