Bills' Debut at New Highmark Stadium Takes Unexpected Turn 

The Buffalo Bills held their first practice at their brand-new Highmark Stadium on Saturday. The stadium replaces the iconic Ralph Wilson Stadium and will be the Bills’ new home starting in the 2026/27 season.

There was a lot of excitement surrounding their inaugural training session at the stadium, as fans turned out in large numbers to watch their favourite players. However, it did not go according to plan as terrible weather and injuries to key players put a dent in the Bills’ debut at their new arena.

Center Connor McGovern and running back Ty Johnson left practice due to injuries. Johnson suffered a non-contact injury during a one-on-one drill against linebacker Joe Andreessen. He walked off gingerly after the fall with a trainer and did not return to finish the practice session.

McGovern went down immediately after while chasing a defensive player during an 11-on-11 run. He returned to play at his position, but re-injured himself and went off the field with a trainer due to an apparent hamstring injury.

“You gotta know your limitations on speed, I think,” fellow offensive lineman Spencer Brown said after practice. “I don't know exactly what happened, but usually in those situations, hopefully it's just a little something. But I hope he'll be fine. He's a warrior.”

A sudden downpour during practice left some fans scrambling for cover at the new billion-dollar stadium. While the venue's design provides cover for roughly 60% of the seats, the remaining 40% are exposed to the elements, forcing some fans to leave their seats in search of shelter.

There is no update on the injuries of McGovern and Johnson as of now. The offensive lineman is one of the Bills’ key players as he signed a contract extension earlier this year. He joined the Bills in 2023 after playing his first three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He made the Pro Bowl in 2024 and allowed only 14 pressures in 16 starts for the Bills in 2025.

Johnson arrived in Buffalo the same year as McGovern after having brief stints with the Detroit Lions and the New York Jets. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 draft by the Lions before moving to the Jets in 2020. Since joining the Bills in 2023, the rusher has racked up 545 yards and four touchdowns while also featuring in the postseason for the New York-based side.
