Bills Eyeing Secondary Trade Addition

To no surprise, the Bills are among the teams expected to adopt a buyer’s stance ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. If general manager Brandon Beane is to make an addition, Buffalo’s defense is the unit likeliest to receive a boost.

“Yeah, I think probably,” Beane said in an interview with John Wawrow of The Associated Press. “We’ll look anywhere that can help us, not just one side of the ball. But I would say where we’re at, if you have one bullet, that probably makes more sense there, if it’s the right move.”

Last week, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer pointed to defensive help as a Buffalo goal on the trade front. He specifies a move in the secondary is the priority at this point. The Bills currently rank 30th against the pass, so bringing in a starting-caliber cornerback or safety would make plenty of sense. Buffalo has roughly $4MM in cap space at the moment.

A modest addition should be viable as a result. Jonathan Jones of The Athletic reports Beane is “at least dabbling in the market” for help in the secondary. Buffalo recently cut C.J. Gardner-Johnson. A trade which results in his snaps being replaced would come as no surprise. The list of safety options could be limited at this point, although a few buy-low targets could receive a look.

According to Jones, the Bills were already in the market for a defensive back acquisition before Gardner-Johnson’s brief Buffalo tenure came to an abrupt end. Beane has been willing to add at the trade deadline in recent years, and his team currently sits atop the AFC with a 6-1 record. The Bills have a regular complement of draft picks for 2027 along with an extra fourth-round selection.

Especially if a rental is to be pursued, Beane should be able to swing a deal in the near future. A small window of opportunity will exist between the end of Buffalo’s Monday Night Football game and Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline. It will be interesting to see if something is worked out before that point.
