Impending free agent DaQuan Jones spent the past two seasons with the Buffalo Bills, but a recent tweet suggests he may try to join a division rival in 2026. While watching the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos face off in a snowy AFC Championship Game, the 12-year veteran tweeted that “Vrable is that MF.” One fan responded, saying that Jones is on the Bills, and Jones replied that he’s about to be a free agent.
It’s easy to read between the lines here. While he’ll probably follow the money, it’s clear Jones is excited by the Patriots’ first-year coach and, by extension, their second-year quarterback Drake Maye. They made the Super Bowl despite going 4-13 one season ago and should add more talent in the coming years as they capitalize on Maye’s rookie contract. The only question is if Jones makes sense for the team.
Despite being on the older side, DaQuan Jones had a strong season for the Buffalo Bills. Starting and appearing in 12 games, the former fourth-round pick finished the season with three sacks, 22 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and a 72.0 PFF grade, the 23rd-best mark out of 129 eligible players.
A player like Jones can still help the right team, but he’s entering his age-35 season and doesn’t play a premium position. Because of this, it’s safe to assume he will not break the bank and just about any team could afford him. With this in mind, do the Patriots make sense for him?
Jones is nearing the end of his career, so maybe he’d be willing to take a pay cut or a smaller role to play for a legitimate contender. However, if he wants to maximize his paycheck or his time on the field, he may have to join a different team.
The strength of the New England Patriots defense is at defensive tackle, and it’s hard to see how Jones fits into the picture. Free agent signing Milton Williams has been a godsend to this defense and is worth every penny, while former second-round pick Christian Barmore is one of the game’s best interior pass rushers. Combined, they form arguably the best defensive tackle duo in football.
These two are great, but fellow defensive tackles Cordy Durden and Khyiris Tonga have played at high levels in reserve roles. The two players are also cheaper and younger than DaQuan Jones.
