Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott is sticking with the company stance regarding Stefon Diggs, who may or may not be a disgruntled star wide receiver during the early days of training camp.
"We’re in a good spot," McDermott said about Diggs while speaking with reporters on Wednesday, as shared by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Stef is ready to practice. He is in the locker room right now."
McDermott initially generated headlines last month when he said he was "very concerned" after Diggs reportedly missed the start of the team's mandatory minicamp. The next day, McDermott curiously claimed that "Stef did everything that he was asked to do" for the opening day of minicamp, and the coach also said that Diggs ultimately received "permission to get some space and head out."
Following the conclusion of minicamp, Buffalo players such as quarterback Josh Allen and offensive tackle Dion Dawkins blamed the media for blowing the Diggs story "so far out of proportion" when there was "nothing to really be worried about" as it pertains to the 29-year-old's dedication to the Bills. McDermott insisted Wednesday it's business as usual within the organization.
"We’re in a good spot," McDermott repeated. "As far as the team is concerned, we have a lot of work to do. I think that’s really our focus and it should be our focus. About the team and making sure we’re putting the work out here that we need to put in."
Back in January, Diggs confronted Allen during Buffalo's 27-10 playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals that the receiver finished with four receptions on 10 targets for 35 yards and zero touchdowns. It was reported in June that Diggs' "frustration (was) with his role in the offense and his voice in play-calling," but McDermott clearly wants everyone to believe such issues are a thing of the past as the Bills work their way toward beginning their preseason schedule versus the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 12.
