Nobody on the Buffalo Bills was happier to see Harrison Mevis’ potential game-winning field goal in overtime of their Monday Night Football matchup against the Rams in Los Angeles get blocked than James Cook.
The superstar running back fumbled for the second time in the game during the extra frame, and it was costly, as Los Angeles recovered the ball and had a chance to seal the deal. Thankfully for Cook and the Bills, Gregory Rousseau came up with a huge play to give Buffalo another opportunity, allowing Tyler Bass to then win the game with a 45-yard field goal of his own.
While Buffalo ultimately got the result it wanted, Cook’s fumbles understandably didn’t sit well with head coach Joe Brady, who in a recent media availability sent a message that it can’t continue moving forward or there will be consequences.
“He’s doing so many good things running the football, and I don’t want to lose sight of how great he’s running the ball right now. But we’re putting the ball on the ground, and it’s negating all the positive. I have all the confidence in him. That’s why I put him right back out there… But at some point, there have to be consequences when we’re putting negative stuff out there. These are conversations that we’re having ongoing. James knows it’s important to him, but that can’t happen. It’s going to cost us football games, and it almost cost us one… We can’t confuse the fact that we won the game with that being OK. It’s got to improve, or the carries are going to decrease,”
The 27-year-old Cook has been extremely productive through five games this season, averaging 106.4 rushing yards per game on 5.6 yards per carry to go along with five touchdowns.
Turning the ball over is never going to be acceptable, but when it’s your best offensive weapon, who ranks among the best at his position in most statistical categories, it’s a tough needle to thread.
The Bills will just have to hope Cook can put this behind him for the rest of the season because they’ll need him at his best to remain atop the AFC and compete for a Super Bowl.
