Bills' James Cook Speaks Out on Major Training Camp Decision

For most of the offseason, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has told everyone in earshot that he was worth more than the organization was currently paying him.

Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Cook has continued to push for an extension with the AFC East champions - with $15 million APY the seeming target number - but has come up empty on that score. While many analysts and fans expected him to sit out of mandatory practices, the Bills' running back has shocked everyone.

Not only has he shown up to the facility, but he's actually participated in practice as well.

To the veteran, there's a reason for his commitment to the team, even if the Bills haven't committed to him.

"It's my job. I gotta participate so I won't get fined. Just come out here and just show them that I'm ready to go. Earn what I gotta go get," said Cook. "I knew I was gonna come out here and work. I don't owe it to nobody but my teammates and myself and my family. By me participating, and showing my teammates that I love the game and I'm willing to be out here."

Cook has totaled over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons and even led the league in rushing touchdowns in 2024. He may not be quite like Saquon Barkley or Christian McCaffrey, but the former Georgia product has more than earned a lucrative extension in Buffalo.

The fact that Cook has shown up at the team facility is a sign of negotiating in good faith.

Now, the Bills should respond in kind by finding a way to fit the Pro Bowler into their long-term plans.
