The Buffalo Bills will be in preseason action for the first time against the New York Giants on Saturday, with this the first chance for Bills Mafia to see some proper football since the AFC Championship loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
While preseason is generally when most of a team's starters sit out in an attempt not to get anyone injured, we have seen Chiefs head coach Andy Reid put his starters in for a quarter or two, with Patrick Mahomes likely playing the first quarter of their first preseason game.
But will Bills head coach Sean McDermott do that?
As it turns out no, he'll be keeping his MVP quarterback on ice and in truth, we likely won't see Josh Allen at all in the preseason.
But is he ok with that?
“Yeah, just trusting what coach is saying, what he's thinking, he's the guy in charge,” Allen said. “So, following what he's saying, that's all I'm doing, and if he said play, I'd be playing. So, that's how it is.”
While there might be some validity to having starters play in preseason in an attempt to knock off some of the rust accumulated over the offseason, and going against "proper" competition before the regular season begins is a good idea.
But the negatives far outweigh the positives, and we can only imagine the reaction from Bills Mafia if Allen were to go down injured in a preseason game.
Yeah, that wouldn't go down well.
So, having him sit is the smart play here.
