Following a disappointing end to the 2025 season, the Buffalo Bills entered the 2026 offseason with a major coaching overhaul after parting ways with head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott, who compiled a 98‑50 record over nine seasons but never reached the Super Bowl, was dismissed following Buffalo’s divisional‑round playoff loss.
Former offensive coordinator Joe Brady was promoted to head coach on a five‑year contract. Brady guided the Bills’ offense to high efficiency in 2024 and 2025 and will continue leading the staff into the new league year.
With Brady now in the lead role, Buffalo’s front office made another significant addition on Friday.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills are in agreement with Pete Carmichael Jr. to become their offensive coordinator under Brady. Rapoport reported that Carmichael is a longtime Sean Payton assistant and was a senior offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos.
Carmichael brings extensive experience as an NFL play‑caller and offensive strategist, including a lengthy tenure (2009-2023) as the offensive coordinator in New Orleans. The connection with Brady runs deep from their time together with the Saints, which gives continuity to the Bills’ offensive vision.

Under Brady’s leadership in 2025, the Bills ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring at 28.3 points per game. Buffalo also featured strong offensive balance and third‑down efficiency, positioning the unit for continued success with Carmichael scheming the attack.
Brady and Carmichael headline a retooled staff that aims to support quarterback Josh Allen as he recovers from a foot injury and prepares for the 2026 campaign. Allen’s presence and the offensive structure will be central to Buffalo’s Super Bowl aspirations next season.
