Bills reportedly have known about Matt Araiza allegations for 'weeks'

A disturbing report detailing an alleged gang-rape of a then 17-year-old high school student was revealed Thursday with Buffalo Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza at the center of the allegations. According to a civil lawsuit, Araiza, who played for San Diego State last season, along with Aztecs redshirt freshman Zavier Leonard and sophomore Nowlin Ewaliko, committed the alleged assault at an off-campus party in October 2021.

The unnamed teenager reported the rape to the San Diego police. An investigation was opened, but at the time no arrests were made or have been made since. The suspects weren't publicly identified initially, but detectives had to recently submit case findings to the district attorney's office, which will then determine whether or not to file charges.

The Bills made a statement on the allegations surrounding the 2022 sixth-round draft pick.

"We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021," the statement reads. "Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil case legal, we will have no other comment at this point."

According to reports, Buffalo didn't know of the alleged assault when it selected Araiza in the draft but has since known of the matter for quite some time.

Tim Graham of The Athletic further reported that the organization has known of the alleged incident since July. The Bills are scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers in both team's preseason finales at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, and according to Graham, Araiza is expected to play in the contest.
