Bills' Sean McDermott has telling response to speculation about potential Micah Hyde return
Jamie Germano / USA TODAY NETWORK

As the 2024 NFL season quickly approaches, it's clear the Buffalo Bills could still use some help at safety. What remains unclear is if that will happen in the shape of a reunion with Micah Hyde.

Although the standout safety who has played the last seven years in Buffalo hasn't closed the door on making a triumphant return, sore necks here and there make him think about hanging it up.

Per Hyde's latest comments, he's solely focused on getting healthier right now and he's being patient with his approach.

Unfortunately for the Bills, that leaves them waiting for his decision without being able to do much about it. Even head coach Sean McDermott isn't hiding that the Bills are totally open to reuniting with Hyde if he decides to play football for another year.

"I think he said it publicly the other day that he was either going to the Bills or he was going to retire," McDermott told reporters on Tuesday. "We have our private conversations as well, and Micah is always going to hold a special place in my heart. I remember going on eight years ago now, standing in front of you guys and introducing Micah as one of the first free agents that we signed here."

Since then, Hyde has made two second-team All-Pros while leading a menacing safety unit alongside Jordan Poyer, who is now a Miami Dolphin. But the former's impact goes beyond the football field, something McDermott is appreciative of as he believes his impact "will last a long time."

McDermott pointed out that Hyde's desire to still put together his yearly softball charity game and help Buffalo through his foundation speaks volumes about him considering he's considering retirement yet still is determined to improve the city he's been a part of since 2017.

Could a reunion between Hyde and Bills actually take place?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: It's pretty much up to Hyde, based on McDermott's comments claiming the veteran will stay in their minds.

Micah is always going to be on our radar," McDermott admitted. "Micah is always going to be on our radar, and we'll see where it goes. Ultimately, it will be up to Micah and Brandon (Beane) in terms of the decision and how that all comes to be."

Interestingly enough, that could happen in the offseason or even once football has kicked off as the Bills head coach believes he could step in at any point of the season just like A.J. Klein did in 2023.

"Micah is built that way, right?" McDermott explained. "He's always going to be in shape. He's out there being a husband, being a dad, and yet also I know he's making sure he's in good shape and ready to go."

McDermott's comments are very telling: This is a team that is seemingly very interested in Hyde coming back. And if the safety is claiming it's that or nothing, chances are he's well aware of what the answer would be if he decided to run it back.

Otherwise, there wouldn't be much thinking going on on his end.
