One position group for the Buffalo Bills that couldn't afford to have an injury to a key player was the receiver position.
And with training camp ramping up, Khalil Shakir has been bitten by the injury bug, suffering a high ankle sprain, that CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reports will keep Shakir out of action for four to five weeks.
That isn't ideal, given the regular season is a little over a month away, and for head coach Sean McDermott, while the injury to Shakir isn't good, it creates an opportunity for someone to prove their worth.
“He's dealt with one before, he's extremely tough,” McDermott said. “Big part of our offense, so it's going to take some time. High ankles normally do. So it's an opportunity for somebody else to show us what they've got and we'll see how that goes.”
With Shakir out for a month or so, the likes of Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore, Laviska Shenault Jr., and Tyrell Shavers to step up and develop more connection with Josh Allen.
With many concerned over the Bills' receiver position, having Allen's best weapon go down and potentially not be available for Week 1 isn't a great spot to be in. Yes, there are other weapons who could step up, so these next couple of weeks are crucial to bank as many reps with Allen as they can.
It is a little over a month until Buffalo opens its season, and not having Shakir would be a big blow, but now opportunity presents itself to the rest of the receiver room.
Who will step up and take their chance?
