Bills take playoff weapon away from their AFC rivals
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills plan to sign former Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to NFL Network's insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

MVS, a 29-year-old deep threat, was a fifth-round pick in 2018 and has since consolidated himself as a useful role player. He played four seasons with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, and then went to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played the last two years with Patrick Mahomes — and won two Super Bowl titles.

Beyond his experience with elite quarterbacks, which will be helpful with Josh Allen, MVS has a solid track record in the playoffs. In the Packers, he had a big NFC Championship Game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2020 season, with four receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.

With the Chiefs, in 2022, he had another big Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals, with six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Last postseason, he had a big catch against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFCCG to finish the game and also a Super Bowl touchdown versus the San Francisco 49ers.

Over the last three playoffs in which he played (he was injured in 2021), MVS has averaged 44 yards per game — which is 10 more yards per game than his regular season average.

Track record

Valdes-Scantling had an immediate impact for the Packers as a rookie in 2018 — at that time, he set the record for most yards for a rookie receiver playing with Aaron Rodgers, which was only surpassed by Christian Watson four years later.

His best season was in 2020, when he had 33 receptions for 690 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, his second with the Chiefs, MVS totaled 21 receptions for 315 yards and one score. He ended up being released before the last season of the three-year contract he signed in 2022.

Depth

The Bills are trying to rebuild their wide receiver room after trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans and losing Gabe Davis in free agency to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Besides MVS, they had already signed Curtis Samuel, Chase Claypool, Mack Hollins, Quintez Cephus, KJ Hamler. The front office prioritized the position in the draft, getting Keon Coleman early in the second round, and also added undrafted rookies Xavier Johnson and Lawrence Keys.

The room also has holdovers like Khalil Shakir, Justin Shorter, Andy Isabella, Bryan Thompson, and Tyrell Shavers.
