Highmark Stadium and the Buffalo Bills are officially going out in style.
The Bills are currently poised to open New Highmark Stadium ahead of the 2026 NFL season, making this year the franchise's final act in the original Highmark Stadium, the team's home since 1973. And to celebrate the occasion, the Bills are taking advantage of the NFL's expanded uniform asset policy to add a new alternative helmet to their rotation — one that should like quite familiar to fans of the powerhouse teams of the early 1990s.
The red helmet is back in Buffalo.
Long-time fans will undoubtedly get flashbacks when the 2025 Bills take the field wearing red caps, but they'll have to be patient for the payoff. Buffalo will wear the new alternatives in Week 18, the team's final regular season home game at Highmark Stadium.
"There's no better way to celebrate our fans and honor our team's history by bringing back the red helmets. The Bills provided this region with some of the most incredible moments in franchise history in the 1990s wearing these helmets and we feel this is a great way to commemorate the closing of Highmark Stadium in our regular season finale," said Bills Chief Operating Officer Pete Guelli per the team's official release.
This move felt like a no-brainer from the moment quarterback Josh Allen touted a red helmet for the team's scrimmage in a previous preseason and immediately generated buzz amongst the fanbase. They've followed through in a decision that should be a massive hit for more ways than one.
It's a win for Buffalo and their fans but also a major credit to the NFL's expanded willingness to fit multiple helmets for players. For a long time, the aesthetics of college football did laps around the NFL because uniform combinations were handcuffed by a single lid. That is, obviously, no longer the case. It's an awesome act by the Bills to put the finishing touches on their long-time home field by blending the history of yesterday's Bills teams with the promise of today's team.
