‘Blunt’ Dan Orlovsky doesn’t believe Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence deserves ‘elite money’
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

Back in October 2023, Dan Orlovsky was blown away by Trevor Lawrence‘s performance in the 25-20 win over the Buffalo Bills. The ESPN analyst called it the best performance of Lawrence’s NFL career he had seen.

It may not be his ceiling, but the 24-year-old failed to continue his early-season form, missing out on the playoffs. The talent was always there, and the Jaguars are reportedly keen to offer him a blockbuster extension. However, Orlovsky believes Lawrence hasn’t provided enough on the tape to earn a handsome payday.

During Monday’s segment of ESPN’s Morning Show Get Up, the former NFL quarterback spoke in length on why he thinks the Jaguars should wait a bit longer before giving the Clemson graduate a new deal.

There's no way that we could sit here and say he deserves elite money right now. Dan Orlovsky said

The reason behind the Jags’ sudden interest sprouted after witnessing several other QBs from the same generation bagging big contracts. Every time a franchise makes their quarterback the highest paid, it raises the bar up a notch.

Perhaps the Jags front office expects Trevor Lawrence to finally cement himself as a top-8 quarterback in 2024. It’s not impossible, but if he fails to deliver on that promise, then it will be premature on their part.

Orlovsky added that Lawrence hasn’t reached that level yet.

You expect him to become any elite quarterback, [but] Trevor hasn't like ascended into that just yet. Dan Orlovsky said

2024 will be the prove-it year for Lawrence and for the Jacksonville Jaguars in general.

The Jaguars head coach hopes the Trevor Lawrence deal gets wrapped up quickly

The pressure to deliver is on both, Lawrence and Jags head coach Doug Pederson . Orlovsky dismissed the idea that they are ready to pay their quarterback just yet.

I know there's a ton of pressure on him to live up to expectations... There's no way that Jags go [for] elite money. Dan Orlovsky said

Well, coach Pederson has a different opinion of the situation. He wants to get the negotiations done as quickly as possible.

It's part of the business. The sooner you get it done, right? It's behind everybody, and now we focus on football. Trent (Baalke) and [Lawrence's] agent, they've continued to talk and will talk, and they're working hard and tirelessly. Doug Pederson said per CBS Sports

Lawrence took a massive step forward in his second year after an abysmal rookie season. He took the Jaguars to their first AFC South title in five years. Yet his overall stats don’t favor him so much. In 50 games, he has won 20 and lost 30; he has thrown 58 touchdowns and 39 interceptions, losing the ball 21 times.
