It is fitting that the greatest quarterback of all time has the storybook career to match.
Tom Brady is one of one, the sport’s preeminent winner who was famously taken in the sixth round; suffice to say, he knows a thing or two about battling adversity early in his NFL career. That makes him an excellent mentor for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders didn’t fall quite as far as Brady. But given his first-round expectations, his plummet felt harsher, and it captured the nation’s attention in the process,
With his humiliating fall behind him, Sanders must turn the page and compete for his roster spot. Brady, who joined the “Impaulsive” podcast, revealed his advice for the Browns quarterback.
"I said dude, whatever happens, wherever you go, that's your first day," Brady said. "Day 2 matters more than the draft. I was (pick) 199, so who could speak on it better than me? Like, what that really means. Use it as motivation. You're gonna get your chances. Go take advantage of it."
Despite his dampened draft capital, Cleveland will likely afford a real opportunity for Sanders. Veteran journeyman Joe Flacco and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett will enter as favorites to start, but neither is locked into a 17-game campaign, especially if a young quarterback shows anything promising.
One obstacle in his path is third-round quarterback Dillon Gabriel, whom the Browns picked ahead of Sanders. Some feel Gabriel was a move made to push ownership away from a forced Sanders selection (a failed endeavor), and virtually everyone felt that Sanders was a better prospect than the Oregon product.
Gabriel might get priority in practice, but if Sanders is more talented, it shouldn’t take him long to surpass him. If he can quiet the noise about his persona and give the Browns the best chance to win, they’ll have no choice but to play him.
That, in essence, is what Brady is trying to encourage. Brady exceeded expectations during the week and ensured New England stuck with him once his opportunity arrived.
We know how Brady’s story ends. Sanders’ fate, though, is as uncertain as ever. It’s on Sanders to make every team look foolish for passing on him.
