Brandon Aiyuk's return: The X-factor for 49ers' 2025 playoff hopes

The San Francisco 49ers opened training camp determined to erase the sting of last season's disappointing and injury-plagued 6-11 finish. A busy offseason overhaul brought in several rookies to replace departing veterans, yet the roster still boasts plenty of top-tier talent.

Quarterback Brock Purdy enters the 2025 season without two of his trusted playmakers—Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers traded Samuel to the Washington Commanders, while Aiyuk continues to rehab from devastating ACL and MCL injuries suffered in October 2024.

Further complicating the receiver picture, Jauan Jennings is seeking a new contract and reportedly could request a trade if negotiations stall. Meanwhile, second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall landed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, though his absence is expected to be temporary.

The situation creates opportunities for several young receivers, including second-year wideout Jacob Cowing and rookies Jordan Watkins, Isaiah Neyor, and Junior Bergen, to step up and prove themselves during camp.

"The receiver room for sure looks different and, obviously, every single year it's going to be a little different," Purdy said Tuesday, "but for me, this is a crucial time to continue to work with those guys—the new guys—for timing purposes and just getting to know everybody's body movements and getting in and out of cuts and stuff like that. So, big time of year for that, but that's sort of been the case every year when we get back and get back into the flow of things.

"I think for the young guys especially, it's going to be cool to see them compete and learn and go through just more pressured situations and stuff and see how they handle that. But it's good for everybody across the board."

Aiyuk's eventual return should provide a boost for the offense and comfort for Purdy. When healthy, Aiyuk has been Purdy's favorite target and a key piece of the offense. He signed a lucrative contract extension last summer following a dominant 2023 campaign, where he recorded 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 75 receptions. However, before last year's knee injury, Aiyuk struggled to replicate that level of play, managing just 374 yards and no touchdowns in seven games.

Bleacher Report's Alex Kay recently listed Aiyuk among the top five injured NFL players expected to have a major impact on the 2025 season. The 49ers not only need him to be healthy but also to return to his productive form.

"Given the extensive damage to Aiyuk's knee, it could be quite some time before the star finds his way back in San Francisco's lineup," Kay wrote. "It's telling that the team worked out six wideouts on Monday, ultimately electing to sign Equanimeous St. Brown to provide some depth and insurance for both Jennings and Aiyuk."

On Tuesday, general manager John Lynch refrained from speculating on a timeline for Aiyuk's return.

"With respect to B.A., he did a lot to his knee, and I would tell you that he's in a really good place, considering all that," Lynch said. "Now, what does that mean in terms of a timeline and all that? We're continuing to assess and get information. He did a lot of his rehab away from here, and so, I think, when you get these guys back, there's all kinds of objective measurements that you want to do.

"So, he'll be working on his rehab with our guys. I think we're encouraged on where he's at, but not anywhere close to having a set-in-stone timeline."

The NFC West could shape up to be a tight race in 2025, and Aiyuk's availability down the stretch could be the difference between a playoff return and another disappointing season.

"If Aiyuk can get back in time to help the 49ers make a playoff push, it could swing what projects to be a close NFC West race," Kay noted. "If he misses a majority of the year and doesn't look 100 percent upon his return, the Niners could very well end up missing the postseason yet again."
