As dark as the 2024 NFL season has been for the Dallas Cowboys, who were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday despite a hard-fought win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brandon Aubrey remains a bright spot.
This time around, he did so by hitting four field goals for a combined 218 yards, nailing a couple of 58-yarders, adding one from 53 yards, and a 49-yarder to add some light work. It was one of the best performances in the NFL for a kicker this season and his night will surely net him the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in a few days.
Aubrey, who has plenty of NFL records to his name by now, added another one that he'll have to fight to keep: With 14 field goals for 50+ yards in 2024, he has the most ever in a single season. Texans' Ka'imi Fairbairn sits at 13. With two weeks left to go, it'll be a fun race to monitor.
Following the win, Aubrey went on the Cowboys' official postgame show to discuss his huge 14-point night and overall that's gotten him to this point process.
"Don't think about the (history) at all," Aubrey said postgame about his process. "The only thing I'm thinking about is going out there and making that kick."
For Aubrey, stress management is a part of kicking.
"There's so much pressure and stress with each individual kick that each one has a life of its own," he added. "Not really focused on any of that stuff until the end of the game when you get asked about it or at the end of the season when you take time to reflect on it."
That's all fine and well, you might think. But he still has to have a cannon for a leg to consistently split the uprights from that far out. While that's true, there's also a big mental aspect to Aubrey's approach. One thing is having a cannon, another knowing how to use it.
"It's just a kick, don't murder it," Aubrey said of his mindset when attempting long field goals. "I just want to go out there and be smooth, (...) when we're within the range I gave myself going into the game, then just use your normal form."
That has to be hard to stick to with the game on the line and when in absolute need to hit a 58-yarder. The good news for Aubrey is he had some cushion, as he revealed his pre-game range was of 64 yards.
The Cowboys might not be fighting for much the rest of the 2024 NFL season but Aubrey will keep wowing fans for the next couple of weeks. Look out as he tries to steal another piece of NFL history.
