Brashard Smith could become major factor for Chiefs on 'MNF' against Commanders

The Kansas City Chiefs have found their groove, winning two straight and pitching a 31-0 shutout against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7. Facing a reeling Washington Commanders team in Week 8 on “Monday Night Football,” Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to post their third game scoring 30-plus points, as they've figured out the recipe on offense.

Facing the league's 25th-best defense against the pass, the Chiefs could utilize the run as well, as the Commanders are subpar — 20th in the league — in that regard, too. Mahomes recently explained that his rookie running back, Brashard Smith, is “making progress” and could be a factor in Monday night's game.

Brashard Smith could be featured heavily in Chiefs' game plan against Commanders

Selected in the seventh round (228th overall), Smith has had a slow start to his NFL career, rushing for 67 yards on 22 carries, and has scored no touchdowns. Smith also has 122 yards receiving on 14 receptions.

The Chiefs' third option at running back, with Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt ranking ahead of him on the depth chart, Smith could become a factor against the Commanders, as Hunt is “questionable” (knee) for Monday and did not practice on Thursday.

Smith has made progress through the first seven weeks of the season, which didn't go unnoticed by his head coach Andy Reid, who said they're “going to keep utilizing his talents.”

"He's done a nice job of picking it up," Reid said, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "That position, you've got to know the pass game, the run game, and then you have these protections that you've got to take care of. They get a little crazy -- the protections do, with all the different looks that defenses are throwing at you. Then also as many protections as we have -- different types of protections we have. He's hung right in there and done a good job. We've been able to give him a little more each week in different roles. We're moving him all over the place. I wouldn't see that part changing. We're going to keep utilizing his talents. (He's a) hard worker and all of that. The intangible stuff is great."

Mahomes added that Smith has been “a sponge” with his ability to learn different aspects of the offense, whether it's running a route in the passing game or blocking.

"He's made a ton of progress," Mahomes said Thursday to Patra, echoing his coach. "He'll continue to get better and better. Coach Reid's offense is as hard -- especially for that running back position, because you have to do so many things as far as running, catching, blocking and all the different things. He's been a sponge, man. He's been learning a ton and whenever he gets his opportunity, he's making plays happen and I think he's just another weapon in this offense and he'll continue to get more and more snaps. And then he's done a great job in special teams as well, which I think gets lost in the fold of things, which is huge on our team."

Brashard Smith can run rampant against the Commanders on Monday

The Commanders are coming off a poor performance against the Dallas Cowboys in which they allowed running back Javonte Williams to rush for 116 yards on 19 carries and score one of the Cowboys' three touchdowns. Known for his shiftiness as a runner, Smith is a “dynamic mover in space,” according to Bleacher Report, which gives him a chance to rush for a decent amount of yards against the Commanders and possibly score his first NFL touchdown.

Smith, given his ability in the backfield and the attention he's gained from both his head coach and quarterback, could get more touches against the Commanders than Pacheco, who has not rushed for more than 60 yards in a game and has one rushing touchdown on the season.
