Breaking down Keion White's impressive Patriots debut snap by snap
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

FOXBOROUGH — It wasn't exactly the Eagles' starting offensive line he was going against — or even the porous Texans' starters — but Patriots second-round pick Keion White made a very impressive debut in the loss to the Texans on Thursday night.

Starting the game at right end, White played almost all of the first half — and he was impactful.

Officially, he had three total tackles (two solo) and one quarterback hit, but it was a lot more than that.

In a quick review of the TV copy, we had White for:

  • Two QB hurries (and another that was close and could be argued)
  • A QB knockdown
  • 1.5 run stuffs
  • A QB hit chasing down second-overall pick CJ Stroud from behind
  • A one-armed tackle on a 3-yard run
  • And a forced fumble that the Patriots recovered (it's not officially a fumble because the runner didn't have possession after the muffed handoff ... but he forced the miscue).

Ho-hum. Pretty boring. Nothing to see here.

Come on ... it was at least a very nice debut, and it bordered on fantastic.

Now, you do have to take into account that it was against backup tackles, and some of the pressure was unblocked ... just ask Bill Belichick.

"Looked like he was just unblocked off the edge," Belichick said of the forced fumble. "Running him off the ball. Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what happened. I mean, looked like he just came clean, though."

Ok, let's try again with The Hoodie ...

"He's getting better. We'll have to look at the film on the game," Belichick said. "Yeah, Keion has improved all through the spring, in training camp here. See how it went tonight. Seemed like it was all right."

We'll take it!

What about the big fella, who is all man at 6-5, 290 pounds and 24-years old.

"It was definitely a good experience," he said. "Definitely have a lot that I need to learn, to take from the game. Obviously I reserve all the rights to comment on it until I watch the film and just assess for myself.

"Just (wanted) to play physical. ... Technique and everything obviously needs to be corrected, but just playing a physical, dominant style of the game was my main focus today."

Mission accomplished?

"I tried my best," White said.

I mean, I don't care who you're going against, you can't ask for too much more.

Most impressive traits that stood out:

  • He lined up from everywhere from three-technique to outside linebacker and wasn't lost. That's impressive for a rookie, sort of like Marte Mapu.
  • He read his keys correctly and didn't get sucked in by motion or playfakes, which led to some of his better plays. Not easy for a rookie, even at 24.
  • Speed to power is obvious. Explosive.
  • Great pursuit behind the play.
  • Strength is impressive.
  • Played a lot of the Deatrich Wise role but has a little more in his repertoire as an edge player.

For a debut, pretty damn impressive.
