The parallels between Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre's careers are uncanny -- no matter how much he tries to fight it.
Both former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks left for the New York Jets, and both had short-lived tenures due to dysfunction in New York. The next step for Rodgers would be to join the Minnesota Vikings, whom Favre took to the NFC title game in 2009.
While the Vikings have J.J. McCarthy, there is a veteran vacancy at quarterback following the departures of Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones and Nick Mullens.
Rodgers has been connected to the Vikings as a logical landing spot due to the uncertainty surrounding McCarthy's readiness after missing his entire rookie season.
While Rodgers may not seem like a cultural fit in Minnesota, a one-year marriage cannot be ruled out until Rodgers chooses his team.
The Vikings roster is loaded, helping Darnold win 14 games last season, and got even better in free agency. There's also no quarterback available in free agency that gives Minnesota a better chance of winning next season.
Favre added steam to the Rodgers-to-Minnesota rumors, urging him to sign with the Vikings.
"By all means, sign with them. They got a really good football team. They're loaded at pretty much every position," Favrr told Fox News on March 11. "They made it to the playoffs last year. They got a tremendous fan base, much like the Packers. If you get the opportunity, that's a good place to win. Of course, you gotta play the Packers then."
While Favre's pitch was in good nature, it's not likely to be taken receptively from Rodgers, who may move in another direction to stay out of his predecessor's shadow -- especially after Favre's vouch for the Vikings.
“Aaron's best chance to get back to the Super Bowl would be with a team like Minnesota who is still stacked, but he is looking to avoid signing with them now that Sam Darnold has signed with the Seahawks because he wants to avoid taking the same trajectory as Brett Favre who also went to the Jets, then Minnesota from his time at Green Bay,” a source told the Daily Mail.
After two days of free agency, Rodgers is weighing his options with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants considered favorites to land the four-time NFL MVP.
But if the opportunity is there in Minnesota, time will tell if Rodgers will run away from fate.
