Brian Baldinger shares wild 'top 10' take about Steelers QB Drew Allar

Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger and Todd McShay of The Ringer are among some noteworthy NFL personalities who seemingly aren't too high on Steelers rookie quarterback and 2026 third-round draft pick Drew Allar.

During the latest edition of his "Best Football Show" podcast, well-known analyst Brian Baldinger sang a different tune while speaking about Allar.

Drew Allar has "a top-10 arm in the league right now?"

"I want to see Drew Allar with (Pittsburgh head coach) Mike McCarthy," Baldinger explained, per Troy Montgomery of Steelers Depot. "The guy has coached great quarterbacks, and not all of them were great when he got them. Some of them were young. I want to see Drew Allar, who's got an NFL arm, probably as good an arm as anybody in this draft, and probably a top-10 arm in the league right now."

Fans likely won't see much of that arm after the preseason wraps up in August unless disaster strikes the Steelers. Per numerous reports, it is a matter of when and not if Aaron Rodgers will re-sign with Pittsburgh this month to serve as the club's starting quarterback through the 2026 season. Additionally, it's believed that veteran Mason Rudolph or 2025 rookie Will Howard will enter September as Rodgers' primary backup.

Drew Allar was not "very well-coached at Penn State"

Recently, Penn State associate head coach Terry Smith mentioned that "our system wasn't built for" Allar. Smith also suggested that Allar wasn't put "in the best scenario" to succeed while in college.

"I was a big fan of Drew Allar," Baldinger explained. "I know he broke his ankle last year. I know he wasn't great in big games consistently, Ohio State, Michigan. I get it. I also don't think he was very well-coached at Penn State. And I'm not putting the blame on (former Penn State head coach) James Franklin or anybody else. That's just guys I talk to at Penn State."

Allar should have time to develop while learning from McCarthy and Rodgers before the prospect is asked to take a snap in a meaningful game. Baldinger seems to believe Allar could thrive if such a scenario truly plays out and the rookie isn't asked to play before 2027.
