Brian Callahan's most important trait as a football coach to maximize Will Levis in Titans offense
Denny Simmons / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

One thing has been abundantly clear since the very first day the Titans brought in Brian Callahan as their new head coach. The hire was all about developing Will Levis.

Coach Callahan has been specializing in offense and quarterback development in the NFL since 2010. And when you look back at his resume it's quite impressive. However, Will Levis is by far the most inexperienced quarterback Brian Callahan has worked with to this point. Does he have what it takes to maximize Will Levis' skill set for the Tennessee Titans offense as early as the 2024 season?

Brian Callahan on development of player-coach relationship over time

In an interview this week with Robert Mays of The Athletic coach Callahan spent extensive time talking through Will Levis, his development, and how he himself has changed over the years as a coach. And in recent years, especially with the younger quarterbacks coach Callahan has worked with, he's had to make some changes to the quarterback-coach relationship (as you can see in the post below).

It's become more commonplace for players to be more involved in feedback as well as direct impact or influence over certain aspects of offense for NFL teams. And it seems coach Callahan has fully embraced this:

"You want an environment where the players...they're not afraid to voice an opinion. And sometimes, and a lot of the times I've found that they're usually right. They're the ones that are playing. and so to be dismissive of what they say, what they see, and their opinions on football...I think you're missing an opportunity."

Coach Callahan made it clear throughout the interview that in order for quarterbacks to develop well both he and the players need to learn from each other. Yes, he has a scheme he wants to install for the Titans, and he also said that he's going to push Levis, giving him as much as he can handle. However, things have changed, and coaches--now more than ever--have to listen to and learn from their players in order to maximize their talents.

"There was a time and a place, maybe over history, where [it was], 'I coach. You play. And you do what I tell you.'...there was probably an element of authoritative, militaristic in a sense, you're a soldier, you're taking orders...and I think that's just changed. I think players today, they want to know 'why'. They want to have input. They want to feel like their opinions are valued. And I think that's what a healthy working relationship looks like in any field."

Having a coach that understands the changing dynamics of the players entering today's NFL is crucial. And understanding that leaning into a good working relationship with the most important player on your team should go a long way in developing Will Levis on and off the field.

Brian Callahan's most important trait(s) to maximize Will Levis

Over the years Brian Callahan has certainly developed many important traits as a coach that should help him maximize Will Levis' talents. And his impressive track record working with top quarterbacks certainly speaks to that.

Callahan's first big break in the NFL came with the Denver Broncos where he learned from great coaches and one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game in Peyton Manning.

Then he moved to the Lions where he worked closely with Matthew Stafford, helping install a new scheme there with him. After that he joined the Raiders where he helped Derek Carr reach career highs in passing yards, down-to-down success rate, and adjusted yards per pass attempt.

And then finally in Cincinnati, he had immense success with Joe Burrow (and even Jake Browning briefly), completely switching up his run game utilization and offensive styles throughout his tenure there.

Beyond just his experience though, there's on thing that might be more important than any of that. After hearing Callahan talk through listening to and learning from players that particular trait might actually be more important than any other.

Levis has already expressed that he feels coach Callahan has "done a good job" balancing the, "I'm going to tell you guys what to do", with, "I'm also here for you guys and we can talk through anything", thus far. If that type of relationship continues to flourish with one of the best offensive minds in the NFL right now, so should Will Levis.
