Brian Kelly Details How Joe Sloan, Cortez Hankton Will Operate as OC's

Brian Kelly and the LSU football staff are in the midst of an important offseason with the program working on the recruiting trail while navigating staff changes.

For the LSU offense, both quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton received promotions as co-offensive coordinators.

There's been curiosity surrounding how the two will co-exist during the regular season with Kelly providing clarity on the situation during his trip to the Senior Bowl in Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday.

Here's what the man in charge had to say:

On the Offseason

“Obviously we’re getting to the tail end of recruiting, it’s been a whirlwind because there are so many things going on,” Kelly said. “Transfer portal, NIL, retention and development of our own players. But I think we’ve done a really good job. We’ve had to hire some new coaches as well but I think we’re in a really good place and in a week or so we’ll get to focus on the team we have so that’s a good thing.”

On Sloan and Hankton's Responsibilities

“Joe will take the chief responsibilities and certainly be the play caller,” Kelly said. “Cortez will have a major role as well but at the end of the day if you don’t like the play call you can see me or you can see Joe. I think we’ll have a clear delineation in terms of the roles. Both of them are outstanding. Joe will be the play caller, he’ll handle the quarterbacks and I think it’ll be a team approach. We’ve got great coaches. Brad Davis does a great job with the offensive line, Frank Wilson, Cortez certainly, Slade Nagle is an experienced offensive coordinator from Tulane who’s done great things and gives us an experienced play caller as well. I think we’re gonna lean on the group and Joe will get the lead in play calling.”

Now, Kelly has provided clarity on how the two will manage game-by-game duties with Sloan handling a majority of the offensive coordinator workload.

The Sloan-Hankton duo has been lethal on the recruiting trail with the pair of assistants taking trips all across America this week before the recruiting Dead Period kicks in next week.
