Brian Schottenheimer Deserves Credit For The Cowboys’ Success
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) prepares to throw the ball, Sunday, October 5, 2025.

After an offseason full of question marks and endless drama, the Dallas Cowboys have looked better than most of us expected through the first five games of the season. Dallas currently sits at 2-2-1, having played tightly-contested games against two of the NFC’s elite—the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.

Expectations for the Cowboys had been low coming into the season, and understandably so considering the regression of their roster in certain areas. Aside from trading away star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers just a week before the start of the regular season, Dallas also had clear holes on offense, particularly within their offensive line and running back group.

In spite of their perceived weaknesses, Brian Schottenheimer has done a great job at making the Cowboys’ offense formidable.

Dallas Ranks Near The Top Of The League In Most Offensive Categories

Schottenheimer’s impact on Dallas’ offense has been noticeable through the first month of the season. The Cowboys are averaging 29.8 points per game, good enough to rank fourth in the league. In three of their five games, Dallas has scored 37 or more points. They also lead the NFL in yards per game with an average of 406.6 per outing. Furthermore, Dallas ranks first in first downs per game (25.0) and fifth in yards per play (6.26), while also ranking within the top 10 in both third down conversion rate and redzone efficiency.

The Cowboys’ success on offense is especially impressive when taking into account the flaws on their offensive line. Dallas’ offensive line was ranked as the 23rd best in the NFL by Pro Football Focus before the start of the season. It has also dealt with multiple significant injuries with the likes of Tyler Guyton, Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebee, and Tyler Booker all having missed time.

Dallas has considerable turnover at the running back position as well. Their top two leading rushers from last season, Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, are both no longer on the team. However, in spite of the initial uncertainty, Javonte Williams has cemented his place as the team’s go-to number one option in the backfield. The former Denver Bronco has ran for 447 yards and five touchdowns on 79 carries. He has also been a factor in the passing game, corralling 17 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Williams had his best game of the season in last week’s 37-22 win over the Jets, going for 135 yards on 16 carries and two total touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving).

Dak Prescott Is Playing At An MVP Level

Through the first five games of the season, Dak Prescott is putting up some of the best numbers of his career. Prescott has the second-most passing yards of any quarterback with 1,356 and the third-most touchdowns with 10. He is also completing 71.3 percent of his passes, which would be a new career high. It’s worthy of mention that Prescott’s numbers have not gone down during superstar CeeDee Lamb’s absence over the past several games.

In his first-ever stint as a head coach, Brian Schottenheimer has made instant impact on his team. The Cowboys’ offense has provided a consistent threat thus far, despite dealing with multiple big injuries. And while their defense remains a cause for concern, Dallas’ offense is good enough to keep them in games against most teams. If nothing else, they are at least exciting to watch.
