Brian Schottenheimer reveals Cowboys' biggest flaw

With 11.7 points, the Dallas Cowboys have the best second-quarter scoring offense in the NFL.

Unfortunately, they rank 23rd in the first quarter, dropping just 3.8 points in the initial frame. Slow starts have forced this team to tread water and fight back way too many times this season. That has become a worrisome issue for Brian Schottenheimer, and the first-year head coach vowed to take a closer look at the team's early game woes.

Cowboys need to fix their slow starts

"I think that’s what we’ll look at these next couple days because I feel like that was the case obviously against Philadelphia," Schottenheimer said, per The Athletic. "Spot them 21 and then Kansas City we were down 7-0. We weren’t very good on offense in the first quarter, first half (at Detroit). They had a few things that challenged us that I thought we made some adjustments to, but certainly the pass rush was a factor."

Even with the tough loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 14, the Cowboys still have a clear path to make the playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles have dropped three in a row and don't seem to know how to stop the bleeding.

The Cowboys are 3-1 since the trade deadline, and acquiring Quinnen Williams worked wonders to fix their ailing run defense. They can certainly put up points in a hurry, but there's no need to make life tougher on them by not getting off to a strong start. Whether it's a matter of focus or execution, they will have no margin for error in the final stretch of the season.
