Less than a month ago, the San Francisco 49ers signed Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension. While at OTAs this week, the talented quarterback answered questions about his new deal.
Purdy has legitimately kept the 49ers from undergoing massive changes to both their coaching staff and front office. There was a lot of pressure on John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan after they whiffed on Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but Mr. Irrelevant bailed them out as a rookie.
Since becoming the starting quarterback for the 49ers in 2022, Purdy completed 67.5% of his career passes for 9,518 yards with 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions
While there were rumblings about Purdy possibly commanding $60 million per year, he made it clear Wednesday that he wasn't trying to cripple the 49ers.
Instead, Purdy was hoping for a fair deal that would pay him handsomely without ruining the 49ers' cap situation.
"I understand where we're at with the cap and all that, but for me, this is what I think I'm worth, and obviously, I'm not gonna ask for something that can be detrimental to our team. And I think we've seen that somewhat, with just how teams have handled some things with certain players across the league," Purdy said, via Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard.
"I just want to continue to be able to play with guys around me that we could all be a united team and win together. And I understand that's so important to win championships. And so I took that, and obviously, we all know, across the board, now we have some room to go and do what we can do, and get certain players, and all that."
Purdy deserves a lot of credit for taking that approach to his contract negotiations. It's not often you see a quarterback do that. Besides, he'll still make roughly $53 million per year under this deal.
