It's hard to be a franchise left tackle if you never play left tackle.
That is the very task that Broderick Jones was given, yet he primarily played right tackle and swing tackle during his first two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It's safe to say, he wasn't a fan of that role...
“They tried to make me the swing tackle. It was kind of funky. I knew I’ll be going back to left, so this offseason, I just tried to focus on nothing but the left side," Jones told Pittsburgh media at OTAs last week.
When Jones was thrust into the starting lineup halfway through his rookie season in 2023, it was at right tackle. The Steelers benched Chuks Okorafor for some conduct that they viewed as detrimental to the team, and Jones finished the season there.
But then came training camp in 2024. The Steelers used first-round capital, yet again, to draft Troy Fautanu, who, before his season-ending injury, supplanted Jones as the starting RT with Dan Moore still at Left tackle.
Did Jones struggle? Yes. Are a lot of the reps he lost simply due to him not performing his technique? You bet. But when you leave college as a raw prospect at LEFT tackle, what did the Steelers think was going to happen when you just tell him to go play right tackle?

Sack 1: Broderick Jones gets into his pass set fast, but there's no punch and no anchor.
Not going to make excuses for him, but Najee Harris either needs to chip or just get out into the flat here. Just muddies the picture. pic.twitter.com/Orm3fb7siB
That's like telling a person with bad handwriting to go write a letter with their non-dominant hand and see how it comes out. So it's safe to say the Steelers did Jones no favors. It was 'funky' to use his quote.
And there is no assurance that Jones will suddenly be better in his new role. Like I said, some teams were leery of Jones when he came out of the 2023 draft due to how much work he would need to put in to clean up his feet and make better use of his hands and arms.
Despite injury and playing the wrong position, we have yet to see that, however, and until the pads come on in a little less than two months, we won't know.
