The Denver Broncos entered Week 8’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys looking to extend their four-game winning streak. The team was riding high after a thrilling comeback victory over the New York Giants in Week 7.
One of the key storylines heading into Week 8 was cornerback Patrick Surtain’s ability to contain the Cowboys’ passing attack led by quarterback Dak Prescott. Surtain has operated as one of the league’s premier defensive backs and has carried his elite play into the 2025–26 season. Over the first seven games, the 25-year-old had recorded eight pass deflections and 22 total tackles. He leads a Broncos defensive unit that entered the game allowing just 18.1 points per contest.
During Sunday’s game against Dallas, Surtain suffered multiple injuries. He briefly exited in the first quarter with a lower right leg issue but returned after a few minutes in the injury tent, rejoining the defense on the next Cowboys possession. However, in the second quarter, Surtain sustained a left shoulder injury and did not return after halftime. He was officially ruled out in the third quarter.
"#Broncos star CB Pat Surtain II is out for the rest of the game with shoulder injury, team announces," reported Luca Evans of the Denver Post. This is an unfortunate development for Denver, as the cornerback depth will be especially tested moving forward.

Surtain’s importance to the defense cannot be overstated. Now in his fifth NFL season since being selected ninth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama, he has continued to be one of the league’s best defensive backs. Last year, he earned the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year award for the first time in his career.
He has also been selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls and has received two All-Pro honors. Over his career, Surtain has recorded 11 interceptions, with two returned for touchdowns. His status will continue to be monitored as Denver looks to return to the NFL Playoffs for the second straight season.
