Broncos avoid catastrophe but last-second mistake proves costly in disappointing loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2

The Denver Broncos lost heartbreakingly to the Indianapolis Colts in a showdown that didn't feature a whole lot of defense. Bo Nix and the offense fell just short, despite a nice bounce-back game from the second-year quarterback. The team also avoided a major scare, as superstar cornerback Patrick Surtain II had to be evaluated in the medical tent, but he returned shortly after.

Denver had the victory in hand with the Colts missing a field goal, but a penalty allowed the Colts another chance at it, and Indianapolis drilled the game-winning field goal with no time left on the clock. A disappointing ending after a flurry of emotions in the last few seconds of the game.

The Broncos' defense had issues with Jonathan Taylor and Daniel Jones

Heading into the matchup, Denver had one of the best defenses in the NFL. According to FOX Sports, Denver ranked first in total defense (133 yards per game), first in passing defense (62 yards, 0 TDs allowed), and first in third-down defense (14.3%) and red zone defense (0% TD rate allowed) after Week 1. Despite the hot start, Denver came crashing down to Earth against the Colts.

Jonathan Taylor made life difficult for Denver. Throughout the game, the Broncos were gashed as Taylor had 25 carries for 165 yards, and despite not finding the end zone, his efforts were tremendous against a stout Denver defense. Taylor showed up as a receiver as well, hauling in two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, adding to his already impressive day.

It wasn't just Taylor, though, as Daniel Jones played a great game, going 23 of 34 with 316 yards and a touchdown.

Denver brought down Jones once in the contest, a sack for Justin Strnad, who has back-to-back games with sacks early on in the 2025 campaign. After six sacks in the Week 1 victory, it was a sharp contrast to what was seen on the field in Week 2.

Broncos avoid catastrophe after Pat Surtain goes down with injury

While Surtain had a scare early on, he returned to the field. Against the Titans, Surtain eliminated Calvin Ridley from the contest, but against the Colts, he was targeted throughout.

It was one of his worst days in a while, and he didn't blanket his receiver like he had just one week prior. Surtain led the team in tackles with 11 and added a defended pass to boot, but Jones didn't shy away from targeting him throughout the contest.

Bo Nix bounced back despite a turnover

However, Nix and the offense deserve their flowers in some capacity. Despite throwing an interception, Nix was methodical throughout the game and carved up the Colts' defense with three touchdowns. He found Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr., and Adam Trautman for touchdowns.

Nix added two carries for 21 yards, showcasing his dual-threat abilities with some big plays in the game to allow Denver to be seconds away from victory. While this won't silence all the critics with his performance, it was a much-needed step in the right direction.

One of his top weapons heading into the season, Evan Engram, was able to suit up for the contest, but he only hauled in one catch for 12 yards on two targets in the contest. He'll look to try and take on a bigger role on game days as the season progresses.

The Colts won the game on a last-second field goal, breaking the hearts of Broncos Country. However, Nix showed some flashes, and Surtain avoided a disastrous injury. Still, it was a disappointing showing from the Broncos in their loss.
