Hockey legend Wayne Gretzy’s famous quote – “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” – may have been ringing in Broncos general manager George Paton’s head when he recently reached out to the Cardinals about the availbility of star tight end Trey McBride.
Arizona quickly rebuffed Denver’s ambitious inquiry, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, which serves as a reminder of Sean Payton’s desire to add a more dynamic tight end to his offense. The Broncos were mentioned as a possible Sam LaPorta suitor last month – another big swing that is unlikely to result in a deal.
McBride would turn the Broncos’ tight end room from a weakness into a strength. He is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl, plus a first-team All-Pro nod for his monster 2025 campaign, and is currently leading all players this season with 66 receptions. But he is also locked down on a long-term deal with the Cardinals and figures to be one of the offensive centerpieces of their rebuild alongside No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love.
The Eagles might be more receptive to a call from the Broncos about their starting tight end. Denver has been interested in Dallas Goedert before, 94WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks adds, and Philadelphia seems poised to sell at the trade deadline with their season slipping down the drain.
The 31-year-old is maintaining his career averages of roughly four receptions and 43 yards per game. Those numbers do not rank among the top tight ends in the league, but they are more than double what Evan Engram is producing in Denver currently. In fact, Goedert’s stats are better than the Broncos’ entire tight end room combined.
Goedert is owed a veteran-minimum salary for the rest of the year that the Broncos could easily accommodate. Goedert does not have a particularly strong resume or high-end skill set, but veteran tight ends who are capable of shouldering the position’s pass-catching and blocking requirements rarely become available on the trade market. A Day 2 pick would be expensive, but the Eagles could ask for a fourth- or fifth-round pick from a Broncos team that will likely be picking in the back half of the round.
