Denver Broncos fans might need passports and pack their bags for Week 1 of the NFL season in September.
The NFL announced on Wednesday that the Los Angeles Chargers will play in Brazil as the home team for Week 1 at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo. Since the Broncos visit the Charges this season as usual in the AFC West, it could happen, and the NFL has set divisional matchups in international games before.
For instance, the Arizona Cardinals faced the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City during the 2005 season for the first-ever international regular season game. A divisional matchup has occurred six other times, which included a second game between the 49ers and Cardinals in 2021 at Mexico City.
The Broncos haven't played internationally since 2022 when the team beat the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Broncos owner Greg Penner acknowledged in a January press conference that it could happen again this year.
“This isn’t one of our [mandatory] years," Penner told reporters. "You have a cycle with the league. I think it’s about every eight years that we’re required to play one of our home games."
"This isn’t one of those years for us, but there are some games, away games of ours, and those teams you’ve seen are the Jets and the Colts," Penner continued.
Add the Chargers to that list of possibilities.
