Broncos' Courtland Sutton shares huge revelation about contract extension

The Denver Broncos ensured that No. 1 wide receiver Courtland Sutton would want to continue catching passes thrown by second-year quarterback Bo Nix when Denver locked Sutton down via a four-year, $92M contract extension early into training camp.

While speaking with Sean Keeler of The Denver Post on Tuesday, Sutton suggested that he left some money on the table to get his deal done before July came to an end.

"The deal that we wound up signing is a great deal, and it was very beneficial to myself," Sutton explained. "And it gives us a chance to be able to keep a lot of really good players around on this team and for years to come."

Sutton emerged as Nix's favorite target during the signal-caller's rookie season as the Broncos went 10-7 en route to earning a playoff berth. Per ESPN stats, Sutton ended the 2024 regular season with team highs of 81 receptions, 135 targets, 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdown grabs.

On Tuesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic hinted that Sutton's deal is "well below" the value of the agreement Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is expected to receive at some point this summer. Due to the market for players at the position, it's believed McLaurin wants to make at least $30M per season via his extension.

Sutton could've pushed the Broncos to give him more money ahead of the upcoming campaign, but the 29-year-old seemingly had other things on his mind.

"It wasn’t about me," Sutton said about inking his deal. "At the end of the day, yes, we work in a business of compensation. (There’s) talent in that locker room, guys that are coming up, that are trying to get their second contract. I was blessed to be able to get my third. They put the work in just the same way as I have. And some of those guys have more accolades than I have when it comes to the NFL side of things … and to be able to sign the deal that we did, it gives us a chance to keep those guys around."

As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Broncos at -140 betting odds to make the playoffs this season. Sutton giving Denver somewhat of a hometown discount when Nix is on his inexpensive rookie deal could ultimately help the club do more than participate in future postseason tournaments.
