Broncos legend thinks Sean Payton can fix Russell Wilson
The Denver Broncos are taking an expensive gamble that Sean Payton can fix whatever troubled quarterback Russell Wilson during the 2022 season. There is at least one Broncos legend, Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis, who thinks he can.
Davis told TMZ Sports that he is all-in on Payton and believes he has the ability to get Wilson back on track.
"I've already seen what he can do with quarterbacks, which leads me to be very positive in what he can do with Russell Wilson," Davis said of Payton.
That was a very obvious shot at former head coach Nathaniel Hackett who did not even make it through his first season as the Broncos head coach. It was clear from the beginning that Hackett was in over his head and was not going to be able to do anything for Wilson or the Broncos offense.
"He's not washed. He's not broken," Davis said of Wilson. "But obviously, when you have a surrounding support system that doesn't support what you do well, it will expose your flaws."
Now the Broncos are hoping that Payton can do what Hackett couldn't.
On one hand, Payton's track record as an offensive coach is one of the best in the NFL. But the Broncos have spent so many draft picks and player assets to acquire Wilson and Payton that it has severely depleted their draft-pick stockpile, while Wilson's contract has eaten up a ton of salary-cap space. That is going to give Payton an incredibly difficult job when it comes to making the team competitive again.
Denver had one of the league's best defenses a year ago, but its offense was among the worst.
The Broncos have not made the playoffs since the 2015 season (seven consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance) and have not had a winning record since the 2016 season.

Nick Saban responds to speculation about coaching return amid NFL rumors
Shortly after former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback and current college football analyst Greg McElroy shared that someone "in the know" believes there's a possibility Nick Saban — who retired in January 2024 — might return to coaching, NFL insider Albert Breer suggested that the Dallas Cowboys could be a potential destination for the seven-time national champion. According to Mike Rodak of 247Sports, Saban was asked during a Friday appearance on Fox News if he intends to come out of retirement. "No, I'm really happy with what I'm doing right now," Saban responded. "It's exciting to still be involved in the game. It's exciting for me to work with athletic directors, conference commissioners, people in Congress to preserve the integrity of our game and continue to be able to create opportunities to help young people create value for their future that will help them be successful in their life, which is what we always try to do as a coach." Saban, now working as an ESPN analyst, will be 74 in October. Per Christian Datoc of the Washington Examiner, President Donald Trump could consider having Saban "lead a new commission examining problems arising with the growth of name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights and coinciding changes to the NCAA transfer process." Meanwhile, it's thought that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones could look to hire a big-name candidate if first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer fails to impress during the 2025 campaign. Additionally, Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd recently hinted that Saban could be interested in becoming the head coach of the Cleveland Browns if the team selects Texas quarterback Arch Manning as the first pick in the 2026 draft. "There is no opportunity that I know of right now that would enhance me to go back to coaching," Saban added during Friday's segment. "I enjoy what I'm doing. I did it for 50 years. I loved it. I loved the relationships with the players. I loved the competition. But it's another station of life now. I enjoy what I'm doing right now and want to continue to do it — spend more time with my family, my grandchildren, my children. It's been really, really good." The "right now" portion of Saban's comments attracted the attention of Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, who was quick to point out he did not say "no for good" regarding a return to coaching. In short, it seems that rumors about Saban's future could hover over the college and pro football communities through at least the rest of the year.
'In what world does this make sense?’: Oilers and $63M forward
According to some, throw out the idea that the Edmonton Oilers should pursue Max Pacioretty. A veteran forward who has earned over $63 million over the course of his NHL career has yet to sign an NHL contract and was recently mentioned in a post by David Staples as a possible fit. In a recent post, the Journal noted, “All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have already signed contracts, but there’s one big name player still available that makes good sense for the Edmonton Oilers to pursue.” Responses have been varied, with a few quite vocal about the Oilers not following Staples’ advice. “In what world does this make sense?????” writes a commenter on a recent post for The Hockey Writers. Another commenter wrote, “Pacioretty is a good journeyman player but he is injury prone now, late in his career. Oilers might be lucky to get 40 games out of him. They should look elsewhere instead of taking a chance on Patches.” Tyler Yaremchuk of Oilers Nation chimed in and said, “He scored five goals in 37 games last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Can’t stay healthy, very old, very slow.” Yaremchuk then went on a rant, listing several Oilers forwards who would be better than Pacioretty. What About Pacioretty on a PTO? Is there any reason that a team that is looking to get younger and faster, and move out depth pieces that were older and less productive than expected, would revert back to last summer’s strategy? It seems like an odd choice on the surface. Something would have to happen that would make giving Pacioretty a look risk-free. That means only a PTO. Even at that point, should he agree, it would require him to be willing to sign a two-way contract for the league minimum.
Stephanie White Puts Indiana Fever Players on Notice Despite Win Against Aces
The Indiana Fever’s starters turned in a strong all-around effort in Thursday’s 80-70 win over the Las Vegas Aces. The starting unit scored at least 13 points each, save for Aari McDonald, who registered nine points in 22 minutes of action. Indiana’s starters combined for 76 out of the team’s 80 points on the evening, which only means that the four other players who came off the bench accounted for just four points in the game. All that came from Sydney Colson, who went 2-of-5 in 18 minutes of playing time. Lexie Hull, Makayla Timpson and Damiris Dantas all failed to score in the win. Stephanie White Calls Out Fever's Bench Be that as it may, offense wasn’t even the biggest concern for head coach Stephanie White. In her postgame press conference, the veteran shot-caller called out Indiana’s bench for their lack of intensity on the defensive end, particularly in the first half. “Our bench has to be ready,” she said. “I felt like our bench in the second half was really good defensively. In the first half, I didn't feel that way. You got to be ready to come in and you got to be ready to guard your matchup and execute the game plan. "We have depth for a reason. We've got quality depth and we've got to be able to use it. So if fatigue is a factor in execution, then they just need to ask for a sub and I'll get them out and get them back in." It has been a bit of a busy stretch for the Fever at the midway point of the season. Thursday’s matchup against the Aces was their second game in three nights, and they will be back in action again on Sunday in a rivalry showdown against the Chicago Sky. White, however, isn’t accepting fatigue as an excuse. This is regardless of the fact that Caitlin Clark remains out with a re-aggravated groin injury. White is adamant that this roster has been built for adversity, and she didn’t hesitate to put her bench on notice after Thursday’s showing.
Browns GM hints club could embrace unique QB idea for 2025 season
Whispers surfaced in June hinting that the Cleveland Browns could carry quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel on their active roster through at least Week 1 of the 2025 regular season. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Browns general manager Andrew Berry confirmed he could consider a unique idea regarding the club's quarterback situation. "We’ve largely looked at the last five spots of a roster as more developmental spots, and that can come from any position," Berry explained via Browns.com. "I also think with the roster flexibility nowadays, especially with the elevations that you’re able to have on the practice squad, there’s just more flexibility in terms of how to build your 48-man game day roster, where it’s maybe not as quite as restrictive in the past. ...If there are four (quarterbacks) that are 53-man worthy, we think it makes the most sense for us to keep them." While Berry made it known he's less than thrilled that Sanders was cited for speeding in Ohio twice in June, the former Colorado star and Gabriel are both expected to be on Cleveland's roster when September arrives. That said, it's clear that only Flacco and Pickett are competing for the QB1 gig ahead of the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8. It was previously suggested that some Browns personnel "want" Pickett to win the starting job since he's only 27 years old, while Flacco will turn 41 in January. On Thursday, Berry indicated he will let head coach Kevin Stefanski determine who starts Cleveland's Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. "I think you guys know us well enough that we work really well together in that regard," Berry said about his relationship with Stefanski. "But at the end of the day, I trust him. I trust our coaching staff in terms of who they want to play. I think we’ll get a lot more information over the next few weeks." It remains to be seen how Berry would respond if a team were to lose a quarterback to an injury and consider trading for either Flacco or Pickett to the Browns. For now, it appears there's a realistic chance that those two signal-callers could continue sharing a quarterback room with Cleveland's rookies beyond this summer.
