The Denver Broncos entered the fourth quarter inside Lincoln Financial Field with a long, dismal history pushing against any kind of comeback.
However, some big plays from quarterback Bo Nix and fortunate calls helped the Broncos shake that history and stun the previously unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles. Entering the fourth quarter trailing 17-3, Denver scored 18 unanswered points in the final period to rally for a 21-17 win.
That rally gave Denver one of its most stunning comebacks in franchise history. Before Sunday, Denver was 1-112 in its history in the regular season and postseason when trailing by 14 or more points entering the fourth quarter on the road. The historic comeback, however, might have been thwarted if a pair of calls hadn't boosted the Broncos.
Holding onto an 18-17 lead, the Broncos took over at their own 32 with 5:00 left in the game. On 2nd-and-6 from the Denver 47, Nix was pressured and nearly sacked, just getting the ball away. Officials originally called Nix for grounding, but a further review overturned the call, ruling the pass incomplete.
On the next play, with Eagles fans still upset about the reversal, Nix hit Courtland Sutton for a 16-yard pass, erasing a 3rd-and-6 and pushing the ball into Eagles territory. Later in the drive, Philadelphia looked to have the Broncos stopped as Nix's pass to RJ Harvey on 3rd-and-2 went for just one yard to the Philadelphia 28-yard line. However, Zack Baun was called for unnecessary roughness, giving the Broncos a first down at the Eagles' 14 with 2:21 left in the game.

That call allowed the Broncos to keep possession and keep the clock moving, a turn of events that would help Denver add to arguably its greatest-ever road comeback. Denver ran the clock down to 1:14 before Wil Lutz connected on a 36-yard field goal to boost the Broncos to 21-17.
That field goal proved to be big as Philadelphia had to now drive down the field without any timeouts to score a touchdown for the win. Eight plays netted the Eagles just 27 yards, and a Hail Mary into the end zone at the end of the game was batted down.
For the 3-2 Broncos, a win in Philadelphia has Denver back on track heading to London to face the New York Jets next Sunday. With their two losses coming on a combined four points, the Broncos showed on Sunday that they may well be a team that is better than the record indicates.
Going against history and winning on the defending Super Bowl champions' home turf has the Broncos riding high, while the Eagles will question two big fourth-quarter what-ifs heading into their Thursday night game on the road against the New York Giants.
