Broncos QB Russell Wilson may not sign extension before next year?

Logic would suggest the Denver Broncos would want to lock superstar quarterback Russell Wilson down on a contract extension after they landed him in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks last month considering the one-time Super Bowl champion is currently only signed through 2023 and cost Denver multiple high-valued draft assets, signal-caller Drew Lock, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant.

That's not necessarily the case.

Earlier this week, The Athletic's Jeff Howe noted that Wilson and the Broncos "aren’t in any rush," "haven’t begun negotiations on a new contract," and have "no timetable" to begin such discussions. Then, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio mentioned Friday that Wilson and agent Mark Rodgers have a history of waiting until the 33-year-old is in the final year of an existing agreement before they seek a new deal.

Wilson betting on himself makes sense, especially after Deshaun Watson earned a fully guaranteed contract of $230 million over five years to waive his no-trade clause to join the Cleveland Browns from the Houston Texans. However, it's worth mentioning Wilson missed time this past fall after he needed surgery to repair an injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand and, understandably, may want some additional financial guarantees past the 2023 campaign before he takes a meaningful snap this coming September.

"Their goal is also to remain aligned beyond the length of his current terms, and they’ll get to work on an updated contract soon enough," Howe wrote of the Wilson-Broncos relationship. In short, Denver fans shouldn't worry about their new QB1 playing for any other club anytime soon.
