Broncos' Russell Wilson was ready to call offensive play before late field goal vs. Seahawks

Nearly 48 hours after the fact, Denver Broncos first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett continues to get absolutely roasted for taking the football out of the hands of star quarterback Russell Wilson and playing for a 64-yard field-goal try late in Monday's game at the Seattle Seahawks that Denver lost 17-16 after placekicker Brandon McManus missed the attempt.

Hackett somewhat admitted the error of his ways on Tuesday. "Looking back at it, we definitely should have gone for it," he said at that time while explaining that the opposing 46-yard line "was the mark" for a field goal. Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Wilson spoke with reporters Wednesday and confirmed he had a fourth-down pass play ready to execute until Hackett pulled him off the field.

"I mean, I think anytime you get the chance to try to win the game and solidify it and try to make a play. . . . I always believe in having the ball and everything else, but also we’ve got a great kicker, and we’re going to believe in our kicker again. I also trust his decisions and everything else, but I’m also always ready to go try to do it if we need to," Wilson responded when asked about the comments Hackett made on Tuesday.

Wilson also made it clear he wanted to run at least one last offensive play on the fourth down in question.

"I was at the line of scrimmage ready to go for it, too," the one-time Super Bowl champion signal-caller added during his remarks. "I was calling a play, and we were ready to go. But that’s what we decided, and we went with it. We missed by, I don’t know, a yard maybe, a half a yard."

What's done is done, and the 0-1 Broncos will try to earn a victory when they open the home portion of their schedule versus the 0-0-1 Houston Texans this coming Sunday.
