The Denver Broncos were one of the surprise packages of the 2024 season. The team ended its long playoff drought courtesy of a 10-7 record in the regular season, and the defense solidified itself as one of the best in the NFL. On the other hand, the offense has limited expectations placed upon it, but admirably exceeded them.
Rookie quarterback Bo Nix turned heads as the Broncos' first-round pick, completing 66.3% of his passes for 3775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Despite coming into the league with abundant college experience, Nix still has plenty of room to grow heading into his second season, and improvements in his offensive infrastructure will likely breed that development.
The Broncos added RJ Harvey and J.K. Dobbins to improve the running game, and receivers Pat Bryant and Evan Engram to improve the pass-catching core. Still, according to one NFL analyst, there could be a diamond in the rough waiting to make his mark for the Broncos.
Per Destin Adams of A to Z Sports, WR Joaquin Davis could be the next undrafted free agent Sean Payton turns into an NFL contributor. The undrafted free agent out of North Carolina Central is a freak athlete at 6-foot-4 and runs a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, but playing in the FCS meant that Davis went undrafted. Despite that, Adams believes Davis could make an impact if he takes his opportunity at training camp.
“His combination of size and athleticism makes him an intriguing player to watch come training camp. You would have to assume he could be a great special team producer early in his career, and he could be a very enticing developmental project for head coach Sean Payton and his offensive staff to take on as one of the team's final WR spots on their 53-man roster.” Adams writes.
Payton has a history of taking bigger receivers and running with them, helping them grow into contributing players. That’s not to say that Davis will be the next Michael Thomas, Marques Colston, or Courtland Sutton, but he fits a particular mold of player that Payton covets, and that could mean he at least has a chance to make the roster.
“For that to even be a possibility, though, Davis will have to make the most of the upcoming training camp and prove he deserves a spot on the Broncos' 2025 roster.” Adams finishes with. As always, there are no guarantees in football.
