Many predicted that the Cleveland Browns would draft their quarterback of the future in 2025 NFL Draft. But to the shock of everyone, they ended up taking two, one of which many considered to be a reach.
In a recent article by Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team, he ranks who he believes are the nine biggest reaches of the draft. Among his rankings, he thinks the Browns took too much of a chance on Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
"If you flip the order of Cleveland's two drafted quarterbacks, there are almost no qualms. However, it was stunning when they selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round," Valentino wrote. "While his experience and mobility are great for a backup, his weak arm and issues against pressure will pigeonhole his upside and opportunities."
The Browns also took Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round after his massive slide, but taking Gabriel over him does raise some questions. ... though we are always a bit dubious about pretending that we know more about the ins and outs of the play of prospects like this than the Cleveland coaching staff and scouting department do.
Gabriel is the all-time record holder for most touchdowns in college football history with 189. While he did do it in six seasons, he only played three games in one of them, so that number is still impressive either way.
With that being said, Gabriel might not have much of a role on the Browns if Sanders ends up being the steal that the Browns know he can be. He will be looking to prove the doubters wrong and earn snaps in the crowded quarterback room in Cleveland
