Back in May, Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry suggested he could soon put pen to paper on a contract extension with quarterback Baker Mayfield, who had his fifth-year option picked up the previous month and, thus, is currently signed through the 2022 season.
Jack Mills, an agent who represents Mayfield, echoed those comments while speaking with Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland and The Land on Demand.
"We’re not going to be dragging it out," Mills explained. "I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap isn’t going up this year but it’s going up next year and next.
"We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal."
As Grossi notes, Mills' comments hint Mayfield and his camp don't need to see how much Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens starter Lamar Jackson earn via their second pro contracts before agreeing to terms on a deal.
"But I think something will be done this summer," Mills added. "As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control."
Mayfield is already the best signal-caller to feature for the Browns since the franchise returned to the NFL in 1999, and his worth will only increase if he leads Cleveland to more than just one road playoff victory next January. Recently, Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said the previously mentioned Jackson "knows" he will soon get paid.
It appears Mayfield can say the same before training camp opens in late July.
