Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett generated headlines when he said after the club's 23-9 defeat at the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday that "it’s frustrating as hell" to "lose the same way every time."
Some assumed Garrett was voicing his frustrations regarding a Cleveland offense that failed to score a touchdown against Pittsburgh. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was asked about Garrett's comments.
"He cares about winning," Gabriel said about Garrett, per the Browns' website. "It matters to him. So, of course, there’s going to be frustration. But at the same time, I think with leaders on our team, that’s us being about our action and being about going to work. And that’s what these guys do. So, we gotta continue to work together and find answers because we want a better outcome. We do."
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski's decision to bench veteran Joe Flacco in favor of Gabriel after Week 4 hasn't yet resulted in the Cleveland offense finding a much-needed spark. Gabriel lost his first two starts as the Browns fell to 1-5 on the season, and ESPN stats show that Cleveland began Wednesday ranked last in the league in scoring (13.7 points scored per game).
"There’s got to be change," Gabriel admitted about the Browns' offense. "I think it’s one of those you've got to work your way through it. There’s some tough times, and you've got to work your way through it. That’s point blank. You've got to get to work, find different solutions."
If Gabriel doesn't deliver during Sunday's home game against the 1-5 Miami Dolphins, he could be benched in favor of Shedeur Sanders. Additionally, some think Stefanski could be fired if the Browns lose to the lowly Dolphins.
Gabriel took six sacks and 16 hits after throws at Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium. On Wednesday, he displayed his sense of humor when asked how he was feeling coming off the Week 6 loss.
"Yeah, my mom used to beat my a-- when I was a kid, so I don’t think anything will live up to it," Gabriel joked before confirming he feels "good" this week.
"It’s part of football," Gabriel continued. "That’s why you play it. We’re good."
Gabriel may need to be better than good to stay in the Cleveland lineup beyond Week 7.
