The Cleveland Browns were dealing with a quarterback controversy over the summer. Would it be Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders lining up as the Week 1 starter?
Watson won the job and has proceeded to lead the Browns to a 5-2 record, good enough to sit atop the AFC North after seven weeks.
Sanders remains the backup, with rookie Taylen Green in the third spot on the depth chart. Yet a roster move made Monday afternoon may shake things up a little bit.
The Browns revealed that second-year quarterback Dillon Gabriel is officially off injured reserve.

This is not a monumental move that changes the direction of the team's season. It does, however, give the Browns a decision to make at the position.
Carrying four quarterbacks on a limited 53-man roster is just not feasible for a team with playoff aspirations. The Browns even had to waive tight end Carsen Ryan to activate Gabriel. Ryan was in a reserve role, but was a draft pick of the team in 2026.
Gabriel's return seems to indicate the Browns will look to make a trade involving one of the backup quarterbacks. That comes down to Gabriel and Sanders, as Green is still too raw to draw much trade value.
Gabriel was a third-round pick last year, while Sanders fell to the fifth round. The latter also failed to seize the starting job this year, but did show some flashes last year to potentially garner some trade interest.
There is also the possibility the Browns do keep all four, as head coach Todd Monken noted on Monday.
Browns coach Todd Monken said decisions have not yet been made on activating QB Dillon Gabriel and DT Kalia Davis to the active roster. Monken when asked if keeping 4 QBs is feasible: “Sure it’s possible. Hell, it’s possible we’ll pick one more up and have five.”

The Browns front office is facing a quarterback dilemma. Yet for the first time in a long time, it does not have to do with the starter.
